Nihahi Ridge is an elongated mountain on the eastern front ranges of Canada's Rocky Mountains and is situated less than an hour's drive away from Calgary's city centre. The trail we took to reach the base of the mountain, Nihahi Creek Trail, is accessible via the Little Elbow Trail, whose trailhead is located at the Little Elbow Campground. Parking is prohibited at the Little Elbow Campground unless you've booked a campsite. Since we had not booked a campsite, we parked at the closest parking lot, which is located roughly 1.5 kilometres northeast of the Little Elbow trailhead. There are a number of trails accessible from this parking lot, so the area is very busy. It's important to arrive early if you're looking to secure a parking spot. We walked the 1.5 kilometres required to reach the first trailhead and began the three kilometre hike on the Little Elbow Trail toward the canyon.
This section of the Little Elbow Trail is monotonous and flat with a lot of foot and equestrian traffic. We briskly completed this portion and reached the Nihahi Creek trailhead in just over twenty minutes. Here, the Nihahi Creek Trail diverges northward from the Little Elbow Trail up the Nihahi Creek Canyon. There was a lot of drainage from the valley visib so the junction was easy to spot.
